Josie was born inland around 1918. His mother died when he was very young and his father, Papialuk, raised him. After his father's death, Josie camped with Davidialuk who took him hunting and told him many stories. Josie taught himself to carve and to draw. He was an early and is still, a faithful contributor to Povungnituk print collections. Knowledge comes to Papialuk through all his senses - hearing, seeing, feeling. When he makes a picture, he includes the chatter and the footprints of his creatures to show how they got there.
